Artist's Statement:
Maps Lost / Lost Maps is a dreamlike meditation on and appreciation of tangible maps in the time of GPS and the digital map.
Though I love hand glued collages I couldn't do it in this case. For example the large letters are alphabet cookies and wouldn't travel well. (later for instance the cookies stained the map made dark patches around them before I disassembled the collage)
I like the pseudo 3-D effect they had when photographed. The compasses, little clothespin and Mexican cigarette package etc. could be glued but would have been hard to pack for travel. The happy solution was to photograph the whole piece. I simply photographed it with an Iphone using sunlight for the lighting.
My friend Scott Walden, a wonderful photographer, was kind enough to print "Maps Lost / Lost Maps" for me on adhesive photographic paper. William Niederkorn and I went to a place where people make handmade books and they let us use the professional cutter.
Scott Walden's work is worth seeing if you have time to take a look sometime. https://scottwalden.net/
