Joel S. Cohen, artistically known as The Sticker Dude, is an American printer, publisher, poet, conceptual artist, mail artist, singer/songwriter, and graphic artist. Along with Diane E. Milder, he cofounded Ragged Edge Press in 1979, an independent, commercial, offset printing company in New York City. Principally recognized for his creative mail art projects and artistic collaborations with Thomas Kerr and Kurt Vonnegut, Cohen has been creating, printing, and distributing progressive political art since the early 1970s.
The
Sticker Dude collects, creates, and solicits artwork, puns, aphorisms, and
short philosophical statements--the verbal and visual symbols, aesthetic moods,
and graphic social commentaries that surround us. After personally stripping
these appropriations of their contexts, he arranges them to achieve a personal
resonance so that old images convey new ideas. He then reproduces the works in
quantity in readily accessible media such as stickers, cards, posters,
booklets, t-shirts, rubber stamps, etc. The Sticker Dude distributes these as
freely and personally as possible. As a musician and folk-rock
singer/songwriter, he performs regularly at Open Mic events, with an emphasis
on sing-along songs.
