Wallace
BIO
Based in
Wexford Ireland, Mary Wallace is a fulltime artist who began exhibiting in
2000. She currently explores ideas inspired by the Japanese perception of
beauty in imperfection, complexity in simple things and extraordinary in the
everyday. She is intrigued by concepts like wabi sabi (acceptance of transience and change) and kintsugi (repair using gold). Reaching back to
ancient media- wax encaustic, egg tempera, gold - Wallace's vibrant use of
color suspended in beeswax makes for an opulent visual experience. She is a
Heritage Specialist with The Heritage Council and enjoys making art with
children.
Statement
Inspired by
that first glimpse of daylight breaking through. Curious to know what colors,
scents, memories I’ll find. In Ireland, surrounded by water, the sky is often
gray. Yet even the grays interest me as I look deeper into the myriad hues and
tones searching for just the right description. This looking has become a
passion, a daily ritual to write - a koan, sometimes a riddle, other times a
story or a meditation - which in turn has led to painting these abstracts I
call ‘Daybreak'. Read from the horizon – look up. Look up, look up.
